John fought at -60 kg in the U20 age band. In the first round he drew T. Magomedov, the Russian Gold Medal winner from the Senior Men's Division. John miraculously threw him for ippon off the first grip. In the quarter final John had Khushbakht Qurbonmamadov (Kurbonmamadov) (TJK) from Tadjekistan, who placed 5th both this year and last year at -60 kg in the Senior European Cup in Orenburg, Russia. Last year he beat James Miller and this year he lost the Bronze medal match to Ashley McKenzie (one shido to four shidos). Last year in Orenburg he also beat Darkhan Serzhanov (KAZ), who won Bronze in the IJF World Cup Almaty last September; and Oleksandr Khmelyuk (UKR), who won Bronze in the Ukrainian U23 National Championships last year. This year Qurbonmamadov beat Jan Zavadil (CZE), the Gold medalist from the USK Prague Cup in February John was thrown by Qurbonmamadov for ippon in the quarter final in just over three minutes on his way to winning the Silver medal. John then won two fights by ippon throws in the repechage before losing the Bronze medal match by submitting to a strangle.

Five years ago John won the Silver Medal in the 1994-1995 age band at -29 kg, four years ago he won the Silver Medal in the 1995-1996 age band at -32 kg, three years he won Silver medals in both the 1996-1997 age band and 1994-1995 age band at -38 kg, and two years ago he won Gold in the 1997-1998 age band at -42 kg. Last year John won two Bronze medals at -50 kg: one in the U15 age band (born in 1996-1997) and the other in the U17 age band (born in 1994-1995).

John has now won eleven medals in major international competitions in Russia over the past five years: four Golds, four Silvers and three Bronzes. Two Golds, one Silver and one Bronze were in his own age band, one Gold, two Silvers and one Bronze were one age band above his, and two Silvers and a Bronze were two age bands above his.
