Sixteen Moberly Judo Club members took part in the Halesowen Judo Club Grade Banded event at Walsall Campus Judo centre in Walsall. The event was split into three sections. Group one for novice to 3rd mon, under 12 years, group two 4th to 9th mon under 16 years and non national medallist, and group three, 10th mon and above under 18 years. The team returned home with an 3 golds, 2 silvers and 6 bronzes.

In group one, Jordan Calver-Moise won a silver in the u38k category. He secured his silver with well timed tai-toshi in his final contest. D’cian Pegus, in the under 46k battled hard in his four contests and secured himself a bronze medal.

In group two Lamar Joseph was unfortunate in his two contests in the u38k category. His efforts were not rewarded and two loses ended Lamar’s day. Brandon Banton fought in the u46k. He won through to the final with his dominating style of judo, but was surprised by a counter for waza-ari in the final. Although he scored two yuko’s he ran out of time and had to settle for silver. Jahrell Romain was given special permission to take part in the combined u55/u60 section. Being only 9 years old and a 1st mon, he battled well in all his contests, and though he did not win a medal, the organisers presented him with a special spirit of judo award for his great efforts.

In group three Ross McCarthy and Reece Morgan competed in the u38k’s. Ross won his pool but then faced Reece who suffered an earlier defeat, in the semi final. In another close contest between the two, Ross won the contest on a yuko. Reece went on to secure the bronze and Ross won the gold with another ippon in the final.

Tyrell Clarke-Harewood started well with a well timed harai-goshi for ippon. However he was defeated on a koka in his next contest, but still qualified for the semi-final due to his superior points tally. He pinned his semi-final opponent and went on to clinch the gold with a waza-ari victory in the final.

Kyle Clarke-Harewood and Ramone Alexander fought in the u46k category. However both suffered first round defeats after hard fought contests, and they both then won the remainder of their contests to secure the bronzes.

In the u50k category Aaron Turner had an excellent day. He won through to the final displaying an exceptional array of techniques and fighting spirit. The final was won with a submission while in osei-komi.

Adam Conroy made his debut in the u55k. He won his first contest quite comfortably, but was defeated in golden score in the second round after another hard fought contest. Adam was held down in his next contest to end his day.

Isaac Carter-Allen was another making a debut in a higher category, the u60k. An excellent ko-soto-gari secured his first victory. However he was caught with an uchi-mata in the semi-final. An injury to his bronze medal finalist opponent ensured Isaac won the bronze.

In the u66k David Logan lost both contests to leave the tournament uncharacteristically early.

Renell Rutty gave a very good account of himself in the u73k and was a little unfortunate in missing out on a medal.

Ella Carter-Allen was Moberly’s final competitor in the over 63k section. She managed to secure a bronze after some very tough contests.
