Robert "Basil" Dawkins set up Moberly Judo club in West London in 1997.
He has established the club as one of the best junior clubs in Great Britain and many of the children he coaches come from backgrounds which
can be described as "difficult ". Basil has become a father figure and a mentor to the children and he has done all this whilst holding down
a full time job and having a young family of his own. Basil received the BBC London Unsung Sporting Hero award in 2005 and was among the recipients
at the 2007 Annual Torch Trophy Trust Awards at the The Queen's Club in London. Torch Trophy Awards are presented by the Trust to individuals who have
been identified as making an outstanding contribution as a volunteer in their chosen sport. Basil was nominated by Scott McCarthy, the CEO of the
British Judo Association, in recognition of his outstanding work with the youngsters of Moberly Judo Club. Basil has just celebrated the 10th Anniversary
of the club and has been responsible for over 100 national medals within that time. Basil continues to devote much of his time to ensuring that the members of
Moberly Judo Club continue to enjoy their Judo.
