The 36th Matsuru Dutch Open Espoir Judo Tournament was one of the top level competitions of the year for juniors in western Europe. It was organised for judoka from 12 to under 20 years of age and was divided into three age categories: under 15, under 17 and under 20. There were over 1,300 participants. Moberly had one participant this year; John Jayne won Bronze in the U17 age band at -73 kg. He lost in the semi-final by hansakomake (inappropriately touching the leg of his opponent). He won all of his other matches by ippon. This is the fourth year that John has participated in this Competition. He won three Silver medals in the under 15 age band. Five years ago (at age 9) John won Silver in the -34 kg weight class, three years ago he won Silver in the -42 weight class and last year Silver in the -60 kg weight class.
