This is the fifth year that the Moberly Judo Club has participated in this competition. This year John Jayne was Moberly's only participate. This was a large competition with over 1,200 participants from over 60 cities in Russia and from Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Byelorussia, England, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Holland, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldavia, Mongolia, Poland, Slovakia, Sweden, Tajikistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. RESULTS Boys born in 1996 and 1997 BRONZE -50 kg John Jayne Boys born in 1994 and 1995 BRONZE -50 kg John Jayne On Sunday John fought two age bands simultaneously, both at -50 kg: the U17 on mat 1 and the U15 on mat 4. He had six fights in each age band, losing in the semi-final in each and winning the Bronze medal in each. John had 30 in his draw in the U17 and 51 in his draw in the U15. John had an extra fight in the U17, since for some reason he fought the first round match twice. John was the only boy fighting two age bands at the same time on Sunday. Four years ago John won the Silver Medal in the 1994-1995 age band at -29 kg, three years ago he won the Silver Medal in the 1995-1996 age band at -32 kg, two years he won Silver medals in both the 1996-1997 age band and 1994-1995 age band at -38 kg, and last year he won Gold in the 1997-1998 age band at -42 kg. John has now won eleven medals in major international competitions in Russia over the past four years: four Golds, four Silvers and three Bronzes. Two Golds, one Silver and one Bronze were in his own age band, one Gold, two Silvers and one Bronze were one age band above his, and two Silvers and a Bronze were two age bands above his. The Russian competitor at the end is Erekle Kopaliani, a former World Junior Champion (2004), who speaks about losing to Tom Davis (Willesden Judo Club) in the semi-final. He says that he also lost to Tom in the Moscow Super World Cup in May 2007. |
