This competition had two age categories: Men Under 20 (1991 - 1993) and Men Under 17 (1994 - 1996). There were 888 participants from twenty seven countries. 61% of the participants in the U17 and 45% in the U20 were from Germany or the Netherlands; 6% of the participants in the U17 were from Eastern Europe and 9% in the U20 were from Eastern Europe. Japan entered 6 boys in the U17 and won 6 Gold Medals; Germany entered 148 and got no Gold Medals. Conall McGregor, from Scotland, won Silver in the U17 -81 kg class. He lost to the Japanese boy in the final in 16 seconds. Moberly Judo Club had two participants, both in the U20 category. Aaron Turner entered at -60 kg, as he did last year. He lost his first match to a boy from Switzerland, who lost in the round of 16. The Swiss boy finished in 5th place. There were 72 competitors is this category. David Logan entered at -73 kg. He lost his first match to a boy from Belgium, who lost in the quarter final. The Belgian boy finished in 9th place There were 84 competitors in this category.
