This competition was organised by the St Petersburg Judo Federation, with the following aims: 1. Provide preparation for the coming International teenage championships; 2. Popularise Judo; 3. Exchange experience of competing with different countries of the World; 4. Acquaint people with the cultural values of the northern capital of Russia; 5. Develop friendly links. The standard, as is usual in Russia, was very high. There were 684 participants from over 70 regions and cites in Russia: St. Petersburg, Moscow, Cherepovets, Kamensk-Shakhtinsky (Rostov Region), Labinska (Krasnodar), and Monchegorska Polyarnye Zori (Murmansk Region), Desnogorska (Smolensk region), East settlement (Kirov Region), Sima (Chelyabinsk region), and Sebezha Islands (Pskov Region), Veliky Novgorod and the Novgorod region, Tambov, Murmansk, Beslan, the republics of Dagestan and Chuvashia. The tournament was attended by teams from Azerbaijan, Finland and Great Britain. Many of the participants traveled for two days or more by train to reach St Petersburg. The organisation was excellent and the atmosphere was very friendly. It ran on ten mats in a large sports hall. We recommend this competition very highly. We commend the Head Referee, Alexei Levitsky, on his firm impartiality. Moberly Judo club had one participant. John Jayne won Gold in the 1995-1996 age band at -35 kg.
