Eleven Moberly Judo Club members took part in the Bristol Classic last weekend. Many of the original entry of 19 were struck done by a flu bug.

John Jayne, 8, and Reece Morgan, 10, were in exceptional form in the u30k category. Reece had started very strongly but lost his first contest after he suffered a knock in the face while trying to survive a quick seoi-nage technique in his very first contest. The technique scored a waza-ari and after consulting with the first aid, he decided to accept a defeat by koto gashi. He won his next contest with a cunning sweep for ippon, and wrapped up the bronze winning his next three contests with his own shoulder throws. John used a combination of his seoi-nage and kata-guruma techniques with superb precision to ensure he would reach his third final in successive tournaments. He was made to work very hard in the final, but won the contest and the gold on a han-tei.

Ross McCarthy, 9, and Petar Vlahovic, 8, found the going a lot tougher in the u34k category. Petar's very first contest was the National C Band silver medallist from the u38k. Unfortunately Petar was caught very early with a drop kata guruma for Ippon. Petar's next contest also ended in defeat by koka after a great battle. Meanwhile after winning his first contest, Ross was drawn against the National B Band -34k champion. Ross put up a great fight but was eventually turned over and held. He made relatively short work of his next two opponents, but came up against the National Champion again for the bronze. With a change of tactic, Ross put up a greater battle but was penalised for a missed attack and lost the contest on this penalty and a koka for being held down for 10 seconds.

Ramone Alexander had been unable to train having just recovered from illness. He was lacking his usual sharpness and this seemed to show in his performances in the u38k category. After an early defeat in the first round, he battled on through his first repecharge contest, winning by yuko, but then lost his next contest after being penalised three times.

Adam Conroy was making his very first appearance of the year and this was also his debut in the u42k. He started tremendously, throwing his first opponent for ippon with Morote seoi-nage. His next contest was caught with a well executed ippon seoi-nage. Adam then displayed his excellent dominant style of judo throwing his semi final opponent with a variety of techniques. In the final he again showed great control and determination to win the Gold after his opponent was penalised for passivity.

In the u46k category, like Adam, Isaac Carter-Allen was also making his first appearance of the year. After being given a bye in the first round, Isaac set about his task with a great focus and purpose. The second round opponent was dispatched with an excellent harai goshi. The semi final then matched Isaac with the National C Band silver medallist. Isaac is himself a National B Band bronze medallist and the two put up what must have been one of the contests of the day. The both displayed excellent attacking judo and with both scoring yuko, the contest went into gold score. With less than 30 seconds left Isaac was caught with a drop kata-guruma for a yuko. However in his bronze medal contest, Isaac unleashed a breath taking de-ashi-bari to claim a well deserved bronze medal.

David Logan in the u55k, was also given a bye in the first round but was drawn against the National C Band champion in the second round. After a great start, he made a slight mistake and was pinned for ippon. To his credit he did not let this defeat ruin his day. In his first repecharge contest, David pulled off a morote-geri with just seconds remaining on the clock scoring a koka. He pulled of another one in the next contest, and ended produced a stunning kata-guruma for Ippon in his bronze medal contest.

In the u60k category, Renell Rutty had come along for experience. He did himself justice in his 4 contests and was able to put another victory under his belt.

Kelly Alexander 14, and Ella Carter-Allen 12 were competing in the u63k in a pool of four. Kelly had a very tough contest against her Dan grade opponent, but she pulled off two well executed sode tsuri komi goshi, scoring a waza-ari and then Ippon. Ella also won her first contest with a neat ko-uchi-gari for waza-ari and pinning her opponent. Kelly's next opponent was thrown for ippon with a drop kata-guruma. Ella, however, was countered by her Dan grade opponent. Kelly and Ella were then drawn against each other, and after a typically determined display from both, Kelly eventually managed to pin Ella for Ippon.
