Willesden Red Belt Rumble and Dan/Kyu Grading

Moberly Judo Club was in action last weekend in London at Willesden. This was an event for red belts. Two club members went for Dan/Kyu grading.

SUMMARY OF RESULTS AT WILLESDEN

GOLD Petar Vlahovic
GOLD Tyrell Corriette
SILVER Lamar Joseph
BRONZE Jordon Calver-Moise

Four Moberly Judo Club members took part in the Willesden Red Belt Rumble in Willesden, North London. Eight year old Jordan Calver-Moise was making his debut in competition. Jordan joined Moberly aged five and has enjoyed his time in the beginner’s class. He made the step up to red belt in December 2005, and was a little nervous going into his very first contest. Being a very quiet and unassuming character in the class, his performances were anything but! He put in two tremendous battling performances and was only narrowly beaten by the smallest of scores. He more than earned his bronze and will be looking forward to adding to his experiences. Lamar Joseph was also in good form. He narrowly lost his first contest on a yuko, but came back to pin his second opponent to secure a silver. Lamar is making very good progress and picked up some further worthwhile experience. Petar Vlahovic, 8, and Tyrell Corriette, 11, were competing in the 1st to 3rd mon section and showed how well they had been training lately with two excellent performances. Petar threw his first opponent with a neat shoulder throw for ippon, held his next and then produced an excellent o-soto-gari in his last contest to win Gold. Meanwhile, Tyrell was competing in only his third competition, and unleashed two magnificent drop kata-guruma techniques, the second ending in osae-komi to take a thoroughly deserved gold.

And….

There were also two Moberly members seeking progression in the Dan and Kyu grade ranks. Horace Carter-Allen, Moberly’s oldest member was in action at the veterans grading also held at Willesden. Having recently achieved the theory for a 1st Kyu, Horace, currently a competitive 4th Kyu, defied the years and produced an excellent variety of techniques at the examination and defeated two opponents to earn his 2nd Kyu. He showed tremendous control in unleashing a breathtaking Ko-soto-gari, in his first and a very smooth o-soto-gari in the second scoring two ippons. Arrun Nadarassa was in Dagenham having recently achieved his 1st Kyu. Despite not being able to be examined for his theory on the day, Arrun went on to win two of his three contest by ippon with his own unique style of Judo, to earn a line up. His first contest in the line up was dispatched with a neat seoi-toshi, while the second succumbed to Arrun’s excellent ne-waza. In his final contest, Arrun threw his opponent for a waza-ari, landing in a perfect osae-komi. Unfortunately, matte was called and medics were called on. After treatment, the contest did not resume in osae-komi and Arrun was eventually caught for Ippon. However, 40 points is an excellent start and it will not be long before Arrun achieves his first Dan.
