Tornooi van Merksem 2008, Merskem, Belgium

This competition had 439 participants, mostly from clubs in Belgium. The age bands were U11 (159 participants), U13 (153 participants), U15 (78 participants), U17 (65 participants) and U20 (38 participants). Liam Rowles was part of the British Judo Council squad of 24 participants. There were two other clubs from Great Britain represented: Coleville with one participant and SR JC Leicestershire with one participant. There were two clubs from Holland: Judo Goes with six participants and Judo Yushi with sixteen participants. The remaining 47 clubs were from Belgium.

In the U11 age band (born in 1999 and 1998) and in the U13 age band (born in 1997 and 1996) the participants were divided up into groups of four, and in one case five, participants within three kilograms of each other. Liam weighed about 38 kg and was in the U13 age band.
