16th International ega-Pokal, Erfurt, Germany

This was a competition for under 13 year olds, and attracted boys and girls from 41 clubs from Austria, Czech Republic, England, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel and Poland. John Jayne entered in the -37 kg category, which had 35 boys. He again won the Bronze medal, after losing the semi-final on flags. The quality of the refereeing was very disappointing. John scored a ippon in the first eight seconds that was completely ignored. (Click here to view the throw). A senior referee was shouting advice to John's opponent from next to the timers table throughout the match. John then threw the boy with ouchi gari and the referee scored a yuko, but the side judges, one while looking at the senior referee coaching the boy, called it off. John was given a warning that if he did that again he would receive a shido. Later one side referee said that it did not count because John touched the boy's leg simultaneously with his ouchi gari leg and hand; and touching the leg with a hand simultaneously or before his leg touching was not allowed, although touching the leg after touching with your leg was allowed. In fact, the video supports John's claim that he did not touch the leg with his hand, but went around the boy's waist, until after touching with his leg. (Click here to view the throw). In golden score John threw the boy into the air landing him on his shoulder with tomoe nagi right in front of the referee. No score was given. (Click here to view the throw). Then John threw the boy again a clear kinsa. (Click here to view the throw). The German boy had no scores and no kinsas through out the match. When it came to flags the referee and the side judge, who looked to the senior referee that was shouting advice to the boy, gave the match to the German boy. The senior referee by the timer's table raised his hand in approval of the decision.

BRONZE -37 kg John Jayne

This is just one of many examples of the curious attitude toward refereeing that we have observed in the last two years at this pair of competitions. The organizer says that they are teaching the children humility. The children and young people, however, openly speak with refreshing frankness and bluntness about the refereeing and behaviour of their elders.
