29.04.06 International Judo Turnier, Berlin, Germany
SILVER -31 John Jayne

John Jayne participated in the International Judo Turnier in Berlin in the U 14 age division (age group 93/94/95) on 29 April. There were approximately 600 participants in the Competition. He won five fights, four by ippon, to reach the final. In the final he faced a boy that he had beaten earlier in the day in the pools by a wazari and two yukos. But this time things did not go his way. John got caught in an arm lock and, although he did not submit and the leverage was not likely to produce a submission, the referee chose the safest course of action and stopped the fight.

In addition to the silver medal, John was awarded the trophy for the Best Technical Male Fighter of the day in the U 14 years of age division. This was a great honour, as there were many good boys from Germany, Poland, Belgium and Holland in the competition. In giving the prize the organizer said that "this is a prize for the excellent technique that you have shown us and we thank you very much for this."

The rules in the U 14 category allowed arm locks, but not strangles, throwing from the knees (e.g. drop seinoge and drop kata-guruma), pick ups (e.g. morote-gari) or leg grabs (e.g. ashi-dori). This meant that five of John's favourite throws were not allowed.

The team trophies were won by: 1) Team Warsaw, 2) UJKC Potsdam, 3) JC 90 Frankfurt.
